History of Texarkana
The first persons to occupy the territory that is dubbed Texarkana today were Caddo Indians. However, Spanish explorers began settling in the area around 1687. In about 1719, the French took over the territory driving the Indians and Spanish further west. In 1840, the area got its first post office.
When the railroads ran through the land during the mid 1870s, more people began settling in the small town. Soon, a hotel and various other businesses were built on the land as well. While it is not clear as to the origins of the city's name, it is thought that it stems from the fact that it includes land in both Texas and Arkansas.
